I learned an important lesson today: First child baby-shower trumps BYU football. I had ever intention of being there early, checking out the new QBs, but I was corrected. Reports have Hall being "ok," Gaskins being good but too predictable, and Cooper unable to handle a snap. I maintain my belief that Hall will be named the starting QB soon, regardless of today's unimpressive showing.
Is today's lack of scoring a scary prediction of next year? Hardly. If nothing else, it reminds us of Mendenhall's bend-but-not-break defense. It is hard, VERY HARD, to maintain execution to sustain a drive.
My 3 cents: Gaskins will redshirt this year. No insider information, but no reason to clump the QBs like last year. Doman/Magnum will be serviceable as 3rd string and Cooper will be fine as the back-up.

Hey - I'm an avid Cougarblue reader/liteweight poster, and thought I'd check your blog out. It looks nice, and I find myself agreeing with your take on things BYU football-related much more often than not. I was at the Spring Game, and taking things purely at face value, Gaskins looked pretty good but had a tendency to make every throw high; I don't think he had more than 2 passes that the receiver was able to catch without leaving his feet. This led to some punishment for Tervort/White etc. But other than the height issue, his throws were on-target and I don't remember any real bad passes (triple coverage, dead duck, etc.)
One more thing (sorry to monopolize the comments :-)
Cooper may not have been able to handle a snap, because the 2nd-team center (#66) thought someone was trying to steal second base; every snap was 2-3 steps to the right of the QB, like he was trying to do a pitch-out in baseball. When Cooper fumbled, I'd attribute it to shock that the snap was on target for once! :-)
Thanks for the input. Glad to have some input from someone who was there. The "2nd string" C will be Sorensen who will be good, or nearly as good as Aulai.
I'm glad you learned your lesson early. Go Cougs!
Maybe I can use this as collateral to name my child Bronco... its worth a try.
I think I heard/read somewhere that they were trying Sorensen out at other positions besides center. 66, according to the roster at BYUCougars (which may not be super-accurate), is Garrett Reden, a frosh. So that makes more sense. Sorensen, per the online roster, is #53 - not sure if he saw any snaps in the Blue/White game.
That is correct. Sorensen did not play much because he is still recovering (though pretty much ready to go at this point.) He was set to challege Aulai last year before getting injured. He is probably too good to keep off the field and will get a shot at another starting position along the line.
