Fifa las Vegas

I have heard someone from California say, literally, concerning stop signs: "The small ones are just suggestions." Apparently, Provo police are not aware of the patented "California Rolling Stop" as another BYU player has a run in with the law.

Full details can be found here.

Essentially, Manase (a California native) has a little trouble (3 tickets in a year) with stopping at stop signs. He never paid the first one and they put out a warrant for his arrest. On Tuesday morning (or late Monday night, depends if you are married or single) Manase was pulled over for not stopping at a stop sign and, aware of his warrant, said his name was Fifa. Fifa? Really?

Anyways, long story short, he was arrested and posted bail shortly thereafter.

A lot of people seem to be thinking this is the end of Manase's career. His charges are essentially, including the false name, the equivalent of a lot of parking tickets. He will be back in Cougar blue and I would venture a guess that he will be on the field against Arizona.

I think Manase will learn from the experience, do his community service and this whole thing will disappear.

Fifa...really?

My 3 Cents: Less than two more months until Arizona. We are getting there!

Thanks for your support and comments! They are greatly appreciated!

Fifa sounds like a nickname. Maybe this is what his fiance calls him and his thoughts where elsewhere... ;-)

No way Manase or Matangi Tonga see the field against Arizona. I hate to say it, but both are the types of individuals that do not reflect well on BYU.

Matangi - no way. Probably not this year at all.

Manase - I wholeheartedly disagree. Manase has been a great representative of BYU besides this traffic infraction. I hope next time I get pulled over for a moving violation my mistakes aren't plastered on every message board and every newspaper in the area. Give the kid a break.

Most of the Manase and Matangi comments seem to lack perspective.

First, what Manase has done is not trivial and is a profound expression of irresponsibility. The citations are minor, added together the entire incident is probably moderate. I predict that lying about his identity is what Bronco will view as his most serious mistake.

Matangi is a different story. If we are really talking burglary , that's a felony and multiple accounts will not be brushed under the rug by hours of community service.

I will not speak for Bronco, but my observation is that Matangi's problem is worse and I doubt we will see him in Cougar blue during the 2007 season.

As for Manase, he will pay a high price for violating expectations. Manase is a return missionary, supposedly getting married in the Temple, the youth role model who tugged a line of kids, including my son, around the Silver Bowl field carrying the Las Vegas Bowl trophy after the game.

As a father, I put my feelings about the incident in the "genuinely pissed off," category, in large part due to my son's following of Manase. He has some of Manase's 2007 helmet stickers, a few autographs and some photos.

I don't think Manase should lose his career, even all of the 2007 season. But brush it under the rug because we need him at RB? Hell no. Whatever the penalty may be, I'm sure it will be more than what we will ever read in the papers. Bronco is not terribly open about these types of things so whatever you read, just know that is probably only half of the story. My guess is that whatever the "public" punishment may be, what Manase has to do behind the scene will probably be the larger part of his penance.

Bronco's forgiving, fair and charitable, but his forgiveness requires true repentance. He may consider Manase's stature as a role model and craft a repentance process that will include attempts to restore his credibility in addition to an outrageous amount of running, crawling in addition to his private apology to his teammates and to his team brother.

Matangi is up in the air. Not in 2007, maybe 2008 but without a scholarship. This means he may leave for another school. Jury's out.

I like your take, Douglas.
Traffic violations? No big deal as long as you take care of them. Lying to the police? Bad idea. This does not reflect the values of BYU. I expect to see at least a game suspension, and I hope to see a contrite, willing, submissive player. How he accepts his consequence can be a huge motivator for the team. His acceptance can do a lot to bring the team together, I think.

Seriousness aside. I couldn't help but think of a centerfold poster featuring Manase running over some players with a stop sign in the foreground, and the words "Can't stop him" on the bottom. Tongue in cheek.

Traffic tickets aren't a damning sin, even for a return missionary. Some of the comments on this thread must be by yewts, because blowing this out of proportion is nonsensical.

3cent: How about putting up a countdown on your page to Arizona game, like the one in the right column here: http://utahconservative.blogspot.com/

Looks like it's easy to set up

I think Douglas makes the most sense. Running stop signs, 99% of us are guilty of but giving a ficticious name? One thing I am 100% sure of is that Coach Mendenhall will deal with him justly and correctly (imagine being on a family vacation & getting this news) like a coach and father figure should. Unfortunately, there will be a punishment and I believe the public part will probably be sitting out the Arizona game. Commoncents talked about the visibility problem but unfortunately that just goes along with the turf.

Get off your high horse Doug. I'm sure your son is now destined to a life of crime because he "follows" Manase. How lame is that?

Your job as a parent is to put things in perspective. If you can't properly direct your son in this matter, you have serious issues. To be "pissed off" at a 20 something year old athlete is just dumb.

On July 10 at 12:57 PM I said that Coach Mendenhall would make the correct decision and I predicted that he would be suspended for the Arizona game.

Whose your momma...championship!

As much as I hate to lose Tonga from the Arizona, it is the right decision. Hopefully his and Hook's suspensions are a message to the team to walk the line.
